Meet Pouilly-Fume from Val de Loire

Since oysters are the best food in the world, we believe that they should be paired with drink that is their equal. To that end, we would like to introduce you to Pouilly-Fume from Val-de-Loire. This wine is a French classic. Made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape, it smells like green apple, grapefruit, and lime. Its citrus tones interweave with a dry, slightly smokey flint mineral taste, which fits perfectly with the salt of the oysters.

How does a Pouilly-Fume get its special taste?

The vineyards where th Pouilly-Fume comes from lie in the Pouilly-sur-Loire area on the river Loire, in France. The temperature here is usually cool, and the heat from the sun is only moderate, which allows a slow ripening of the grapes’ fresh acids. Underneath the wonderful soil of the vineyards is limestone. Sometimes it is mixed with flint, and that gives the wine its light, smokey, characteristic taste.

How should I drink a Pouilly-Fume?

Next time you have a plate of oysters, put the Pouilly-Fume in the fridge for at least two hours beforehand. Open and drink it cool – it’s at its best between 46 to 50 degrees fahrenheit. Pair it with some freshly shucked oysters, and enjoy the way that the tastes complement each other. Cheers!
